After successfully hosting the Howard Keel NSPCC Golf Classic for eighteen years, sadly, shortly after last year’s tournament, Howard succumbed to colon cancer and died at his California home at the age of 85. Over the eighteen years Howard raised in excess of two-million pounds for the NSPCC.
It was always Howard’s wish to host at least 20 tournaments on
behalf of the NSPCC and with his wife Judy’s consent, the tournament
went ahead in his memory. This year’s tournament was hosted by
one of the music industry’s all-time greats Don Felder, who was
an original member and lead guitarist of the American supergroup "The
Eagles”.
Don has supported the tournament for the last four years and this year,
with the support of other Rock and Roll legends, lead the post-tournament
cabaret at Manchester’s Jarvis Piccadilly Hotel.
After meeting Howard at the tournament they became great friends and
Don has been quoted recently as saying that he is;
"
proud and delighted to take over where Howard left off and will host
the tournament for the benefit of the NSPCC for the foreseeable future.”
The charity auction on this eve was presented by Willie Thorne (world
champion snooker player).
