Thomas Hauser was an inspiration to the young people of his home town of Alsager. So much so, that the sixth form pupils of Alsager Comprehensive have nominated Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) as their chosen charity this year.
Although Thomas was living with cancer, his drive and determination
to help TCT, resulted in £7,000 being raised for the Charity before
his untimely death at the age of 20.
TCT is a charity devoted to improving the lives of teenagers and young
adults with cancer, a severely medically and socially underserved group.
TCT achieves its goals through a number of initiatives, all dependent
on private fundraising efforts that range from high profile concerts
and sponsored treks to local community events and personal charitable
giving.
To date, TCT has built eight units in London (2 sites), Leeds,
Liverpool, Birmingham, Sheffield, Newcastle and Manchester and is in
discussion
with an additional 15 trusts.
TCT anticipates that the concentration of medical expertise within these
units can improve chances of recovery by 15%.
Units cost over £1 million each to build and TCT aims to complete
at least 20 units in the UK so that every teenager and young adult with
cancer in the UK has access to these facilities.
The people of Alsager took Thomas and the Charity to their hearts and
a real sense of community has resulted in a variety of benefit events
being staged. One of these; a twenty-four hour soccer marathon, raised
a further £7,000.
Recently, Alsager Golf Club was the venue for a disco and buffet and
the event raised £3,601 for the Charity. Bellagio Time were pleased
to be able to donate a 2.1ct diamond lady’s gold timepiece to the
auction, which has resulted in a further pledge of £1,000 to the
Charity.
All the monies raised by the children and adults of Alsager is to be pooled, and a cheque presentation for approximately £20,000 is now being planned.
